The Best Time to Visit Cape Cod: Air and Water Temperatures, Lifeguards and Prices by Month

Signal notes

  • At Hyannis airport the NOAA normal high is 80.8 F in July and 73.1 F in September.
  • Water at the NOAA Woods Hole station averaged 72.4 F in July 2025 and 69.9 F in September 2025.
  • Lifeguards are on duty at National Seashore beaches from late June through Labor Day only.

Ask ten people when to go to Cape Cod and you will get answers from June to October. They are all right about something. The real question is which trade-off you prefer: warm water and full services in July and August, or quieter roads and cheaper ferries with fewer lifeguards in the shoulder months. Here is what the numbers say.

An empty beach in early autumn with long shadows, a lone lifeguard chair and folded umbrellas, golden dune grass and a clear sky

Air temperature

NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the weather station at Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, and for the station at Chatham’s airport on the elbow of the Cape, give a clear picture of the season.

MonthHyannis high / lowChatham high / lowHyannis rain
May65.0 / 48.0 F61.9 / 48.0 F3.42 in
June73.9 / 57.5 F71.5 / 57.2 F3.14 in
July80.8 / 64.8 F78.7 / 64.2 F2.68 in
August79.7 / 63.4 F77.7 / 63.5 F3.25 in
September73.1 / 55.8 F71.1 / 57.5 F3.85 in
October63.4 / 45.7 F61.3 / 47.4 F4.33 in

July and August are nearly identical, and September is about as warm as June. July is the driest month at Hyannis; October is the wettest of the six. Chatham runs a degree or two cooler in summer afternoons but holds a little more warmth overnight in the fall.

Water temperature

Air temperature is only half of a beach day. NOAA’s tide station at Woods Hole in Falmouth recorded these monthly averages in 2025, calculated from its hourly readings:

Month (2025)Average water temperature at Woods Hole
May57.3 F
June65.6 F
July72.4 F
August72.3 F
September69.9 F
October63.3 F

The pattern matters more than the exact figure: the water lags the air. It is still cool in June, warmest in July and August, and September water is warmer than June water. One harbor station is not the whole Cape, and the open Atlantic beaches of the Outer Cape can feel quite different on any given day.

Services and safety

The calendar of public services is the other half of the decision:

  • Lifeguards are typically on duty at the six Cape Cod National Seashore beaches from late June through Labor Day. Outside that window there are none.
  • Sharks stay late. The Seashore warns that shark activity remains high through September and October, after lifeguards have gone. See Sharks and Rip Currents on Cape Cod: What the Research Shows and How to Swim Smart.
  • Seashore facilities are fully open in summer. The park says some visitor facilities close from November through April.
  • Beach entrance fees at the Seashore are collected in spring, summer and fall.
  • State campgrounds run from April through October.
  • The CapeFLYER train runs only from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
  • Nantucket’s island bus, The Wave, runs from mid-May to early October, and the Oak Bluffs ferry port on Martha’s Vineyard is used from May through October.

Prices: the ferry calendar as a guide

Rental prices are set by thousands of owners, but the Steamship Authority’s published car fares show the season the market follows. In 2026, taking a car under 17 feet one-way to Martha’s Vineyard costs $73.50 from January 5 to March 31, $115.50 from April 1 to May 14, $127 Monday to Thursday and $168 Friday to Sunday from May 15 to September 14, and $127 again from September 15 to October 31. Nantucket follows the same calendar at higher prices. Peak weekends are the most expensive moment to move; weekdays and the period after mid-September are cheaper.

Month by month

June

Long days, green landscapes and air temperatures close to September’s, but the water is cooler and lifeguards do not start until late in the month. Good for biking, walking and the canal. The CapeFLYER is running.

July and August

The warmest air and water, full lifeguard coverage and every service open. Also the busiest weeks on the bridges and ferries, and the hardest time to find a campsite: state campground bookings open four months ahead, so a July site means booking in March. See Camping on Cape Cod: State Park Sites, Yurts and the Booking Rules That Trip People Up.

September

A popular shoulder month. The water is still warmer than in June, the summer crowds thin after Labor Day and mid-week ferry fares stay below the weekend rate. The catches: no lifeguards, high shark activity and the end of the weekend train.

October

Cooler and wetter, with highs in the low 60s. Good for walking the beaches and trails, less so for swimming. In 2026, part of the Rail Trail in Eastham is closed from October 14 to November 30 for maintenance; see Biking the Cape Cod Rail Trail: Trailheads, Parking, Trail Rules and the 2026 Eastham Closure.

Tip: If you can choose only one week and want to swim, the numbers point to late July or the first half of August. If you would trade some water warmth for space and lower ferry costs, aim for the week after Labor Day and swim near shore at beaches you know.
